High-Fat Diet Beat Cancer? - TIME

nb - see commentary here: German Wurzburg Cancer Trial Showing Real Promise With Ketogenic Diet - Wellsphere

Extract:

n 1924, the German Nobel laureate Otto Warburg first published his observations of a common feature he saw in fast-growing tumors: unlike healthy cells, which generate energy by metabolizing sugar in their mitochondria, cancer cells appeared to fuel themselves exclusively through glycolysis, a less-efficient means of creating energy through the fermentation of sugar in the cytoplasm. Warburg believed that this metabolic switch was the primary cause of cancer, a theory that he strove, unsuccessfully, to establish until his death in 1970.

What they believe is that it can be therapeutically exploited. The theory is simple: If most aggressive cancers rely on the fermentation of sugar for growing and dividing, then take away the sugar and they should stop spreading. Meanwhile, normal body and brain cells should be able to handle the sugar starvation; they can switch to generating energy from fatty molecules called ketone bodies — the body's main source of energy on a fat-rich diet — an ability that some or most fast-growing and invasive cancers seem to lack.

The good news is that for five patients who were able to endure three months of carb-free eating, the results were positive: the patients stayed alive, their physical condition stabilized or improved and their tumors slowed or stopped growing, or shrunk. These early findings have elicited "very positive reactions and an increased interest from colleagues," Kämmerer says.

Sugar - its OK in absence of PUFA, Ray Peat

....as discussed in Peat vs. Paleo - The Danny Roddy Weblog - Animal-Based Nutrition

Ray Peat on dietary sucrose:

Paleo advocates recommend lower carb diets. Sisson recommends 150 grams (or less) of carbohydrates a day, while others recommend ketogenic levels (50g or less).  This is the greatest departure Ray Peat makes from the typical paleo diet.

He states that sugar (sucrose, fructose) is not an issue when polyunsaturated fats are not in the diet.

Dietary Sugar and Mental Illness Linked - Psychology Today

Dietary Sugar and Mental Illness: A Surprising Link | Psychology Today

by Dr Steve Ilardi. Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Duke University in 1995, and has since served on the faculties of the University of Colorado and (presently) the University of Kansas. The author of over 40 professional articles on mental illness, Dr. Ilardi is a nationally recognized expert on depression. His work has been honored by the American Psychological Association's prestigious Blau Award for early career contributions to the field, and his research on the neuroscience of depression has been funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH).

"Noted British psychiatric researcher Malcolm Peet has conducted a provocative cross-cultural analysis of the relationship between diet and mental illness. His primary finding may surprise you: a strong link between high sugar consumption and the risk of both depression and schizophrenia.
In fact, there are two potential mechanisms through which refined sugar intake could exert a toxic effect on mental health.

First, sugar actually suppresses activity of a key growth hormone in the brain called BDNF. This hormone promotes the health and maintenance of neurons in the brain, and it plays a vital role in memory function by triggering the growth of new connections between neurons. BDNF levels are critically low in both depression and schizophrenia, which explains why both syndromes often lead to shrinkage of key brain regions over time (yes, chronic depression actually leads to brain damage). There's also evidence from animal models that low BDNF can trigger depression.

Second, sugar consumption triggers a cascade of chemical reactions in the body that promote chronic inflammation. Now, under certain circumstances (like when your body needs to heal a bug bite), a little inflammation can be a good thing, since it can increase immune activity and blood flow to a wound. But in the long term, inflammation is a big problem. It disrupts the normal functioning of the immune system, and wreaks havoc on the brain.

Inflammation is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and even some forms of cancer . . . it's also linked to a greater risk of depression and schizophrenia. And again, eating refined sugar triggers inflammation. So does eating heavily processed molecular cousins like 'high fructose corn syrup'.

As I've become increasingly convinced by these research data, I've begun gently encouraging my depressed patients to simply try cutting out sugars for a couple of weeks to see if they notice any effect. (I also ask them to cut out simple starches - like crackers and white bread - which the body converts directly to sugars). A few have had the courage and determination to given it a go: they're reported remarkable improvements in mood, energy, and mental clarity.

Largely carnivorous - "dont buy into fruit & vegetables"

Phd nutritional biochemist and bodybuilder Dr Greg Ellis (pictured - and see: 50kzone: Body fueled by fat, not carbs - Dr. Greg Ellis ) talks about why he has hardly eaten any fruit and vegetables for 15 years.

now 64, he eats largely meat (see also: 50kzone: Totally carnivorous - Augustus Owsley Stanley III).  his approach is partly  to minimise glycation, a topic he has written a book on called the "Glycation Factor", and  see:
- 50kzone: Glycation - Wikipedia
- 50kzone: Glycation - causes disease and aging
- 50kzone: Glycation - heart disease and cancer

his approach is also based on the view that fruit and vegetables are nutritionally unnecessary.  he says:
"I want to keep glucose out of my body, and I can only do that by not eating carbohydrates"

"fruits are very high in carbohydrates.....and fructose is a nasty actor too"

"I see no nutritional need for fruit and vegetables....that all started 100 years ago....I don't buy into the need for them"

Ellis says that our bodies can run amazingly well on a fat and protein based diet, and with very little carbohydrates (in his case less than 50 grams per day).  further resources on him:

    Glycation - Wikipedia

Glycation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Endogenous glycations occur mainly in the bloodstream to a small proportion of the absorbed simple sugars: glucose, fructose, and galactose. It appears that fructose and galactose have approximately ten times the glycation activity of glucose, the primary body fuel.[6]

Phd nutritional biochemist and bodybuilder Dr. Greg Ellis has written a book titled "The Glycation Factor". he says that carbs interact with protein and this leads to glycation, inflammation and disease. atherosclerosis in diabetics (ie blood sugar too high) is known to be caused via glycation - see 50kzone: Glycation, heart disease and cancer
